Literacy is the foundation of all learning. Students, of all ages, should be practicing reading daily. In addition, it is very important for students to listen to stories that are above their independent reading level. I strongly believe that students should have the opportunity to hear quality literature, from the classics to contemporary stories being read aloud.
First grade students should be practice their reading skills for ten to fifteen minutes per day. Fluency skills improve by reading easy text ("Easy reading makes reading easy"). Young readers also love to read familiar material over and over. Don't fret if your child is reading the same book again and again.
